Krishnavenamma Ganti (1910-96)

Sarasakavayitri Smt. Krishnavenamma Ganti was born in 1910 to a Dravida Brahmin couple, Subbalakshamma and Ramasarma Karra, in Chittore in Anadhra Pradesh. Karra family migrated from Amalapuram of Godavari district of Andhra region to Rayalaseema and settled in parts of Chittoor and Cuddapah districts. At a very early age she was married to Venkatasubbayya Ganti of Yerraguntlapalle village in Proddatur taluk of Cuddapah District in Andhra Pradesh.
In the year 1930 she left for Bombay (now Mumbai) where her husband had been employed in the General Motors Company. Her parents were highly educated. Her mother was a poetess and had written “Chandrakalavilasam” that had been prescribed as a textbook for Telugu Vidwan by the University of Madras (now Chennai). Her brother was a Sanskrit scholar. Her husband, Venkatasubbayya, who was also a poet and scholar in Telugu and Sanskrit, encouraged her very much. She started writing poems and articles in Telugu magazines like Bharathi, Trilinga and especially Grihalakshmi, a monthly journal published by late Dr. K. N. Kesari at his Lodhra press at Madras. After the demise of her husband she had shifted to Proddatur near her husband’s place in 1942. In 1950 she received Grihalakshmi Swarnakankanam award for her contribution to Telugu Literature for her book “Sri Gnanaprasunambika Satakam”.
She published later several books of which notable are: 1. Sairandhri a criticism of the characters of Mahabharatha through the eyes of Sairandhri (Draupadi) 2. Dhuryodhanuni Atmagatam which is opposite point of view of Dhuryodhana, 3. Pavana Sandesam, 4. Sri Rajarajeswari Satakam , and 5. Talapotha, poems written upon seeing the ruins of Hampi. She was awarded “Sri Gadiyaram Venkatasheshasastri” memorial prize. Her prabhanda kavya “Girijakalyanam” was got published with the financial assistance of Andhra Kala Parishad. The Andhra Sahitya Kala Parishad awarded her in 1978 for her literary work. She had given several lectures on Telugu literature. She was a well-known participant of “Ashtavadhana m” and always her role used to be “Nishidhakshari”.
She died at a ripe age of 86 in Proddatur and leaving behind a son Dattatreya, a leading advocate in Proddatur, a daughter who lives in Mumbai and grand children, great grand children.
Krishna Kumar Ganti is a grandson of Krishnavenamma. He is 42-years old and is married with two children of ages 9 and 1 years. The family has a tradition of helping the community by participating in various welfare schemes for the uplift of poor. He has been working as a Chartered Accountant for the past 18 years at various organizations such as Coromandel Fertilisers in India; Electrolux in UAE & Singapore, Medlux in Singapore, Malaysia and presently working with Thakral Group of Companies in Singapore & Dubai (based in Dubai, UAE).
