Rajini

Rajnikanth: Return of the King

Rajnikanth is India's biggest star. With his latest movie Chandramukhi already grossing $10 million, Rajni is now India's most highly paid actor. Rajni will be charging 50% of Chandramukhi's gross revenue as his fee. With Chandramukhi, Rajni has overtaken the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and his immediate competitor, Chiranjeevi. Chiranjeevi's Tagore was considered the biggest regional language hit so far.

Incidentally, this year Rajni will be completing 30 years in the industry.

Moondru Mudichu

Rajni was first spotted by K Balachander, who is said to have commented to a friend, "Watch out! There is a fire in the young man's eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm." He offered Rajni a full length role in Moondru Mudichu .

In the movie Rajni was neither a hero, nor a traditional villain. He kills his friend in a jealous rage when he discovers that the girl he loves, loved his friend. The audience loved this new avatar of the hero who had distinct shades of grey to his personality.

Mannerisms - a trendsetter

Rajni's fans were introduced to his trademark antics in Moondru Mudichu where he lit a cigarette by placing it on his palm and suddenly before you could blink the cigarette was in his mouth!

Later the cigarette would do somersaults in the air and land pat between his lips. His fans also came to expect wicked pelvic thrusts in all his movies.

They loved it when he tossed his thick mane of hair!

Fans fida on Rajni one-liners

Rajni's movies had to have one thunderous one-liners. Here are some of his most memorable ones.

Arunachalam
- "God proposes...Arunachalam disposes"
Padayappa
- "The path I walk will be unique."
Muthu
- "When I will make an entrance, where and how.. nobody will now. But when I do make one, it will be at the right time."
Annamalai
- "I'll do what I say, and also what I don't say"
Baba
- "It's already over... Past is past..."

Once a movie works, umpteen copies follow. Once Moondru Mudichu was a hit, producers wanted Rajni to do similar anti-hero roles in all subsequent movies. Even his mentor K Balachander who was known to revamp the popular image of stars, cast Rajni in negative roles.

The audience loved his swagger and his casual wickedness. He was a sadist husband in Avargal and a vagabond in Thappu Thalangal. In Gayathri he secretly made blue films of his wife.

King of Mush

It was director SP Muthuraman who gave Rajni a fresh lease of life when he decided to cast him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri.

The success of the movie (where he accepts a woman and her child after she is betrayed by her lover) prompted Muthuraman to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan. Women loved the new sentimental Rajni in Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai.

Billa

The second phase of Rajni's life started with K Balaji's Billa. Billa (Rajnikant) is a feared Mafia don in Madras, who is fatally wounded during an encounter with the police. Wanting to uncover Billa's accomplices, the police commissioner trains a look-alike village bumpkin (also Rajnikant) to pose as Billa and infiltrate the gang. Sounds familiar? The movie was a remake of Amitabh's hit movie Don. With this movie, Rajni became the all-rounder hero. He could do villainous roles, he could be romantic, sentimental and he was superb in action sequences.

Moondru Mugham

Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the landmark, super-dooper hit Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role.

Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni's fans can never tire of the thalaivar's verbal clash with villain Senthamarai.

Billa
wasn't the only Amitabh remake Rajni acted in. Can you guess some of the others?

Chittor Nagaiah--one of the greatest indian actors

Vuppaladadiyam Nagiah,

traditionally known as Chittoor V. Nagiah was a wide-ranging celebrity of the South Indian Cinema who was called as the 'actor saint' was well liked as an avid performer, refined music composer, incomparable musician, vocalist, filmmaker and director. He was the first person who got the respect not only from the Telugu film industry as well as the Tamil film industry. He was extremely civilized and sympathetic towards his fellow beings. His life personified like an ocean current, which sprang up out of the blue and fell down instantly.

Nagiah was born on 28th March 1904 in a Telugu Brahmin family at Repalle in Guntur District, in 1904 to the blessed couple Sri Ramalinga Sarma and Smt.Venkata Lakshmamba. Nagiah's ancestors used to be very rich and the family comprised more of Pandits who accomplished Yagas. His parents thought that Nagiah was born by the blessings of the Snake God, Nageswara Swami and named him as 'Nageswaram' but affectionately called him 'Nagu'. At the time when Nagiah was born, his family devolved into very misfortunate circumstances. As there were a lot of hazards in his family, he was taken to Gogunur and from there to Kuppam and again to Thirupathi. There he studied with the help of scholarship provided by the Thirupathi Devasthanam during 1918. He couldn't extend for higher studies as he drew rather more interest in music and stage plays. He completed his B. A. Degree at Chittoor. He worked as a clerk in a local government office and as a news reporter for the new paper 'Andhra Patrika' in Chittoor for a short while but soon he found the was work would not suit him and dropped out.

Nagiah was intensely motivated by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru. He partook in the Indian Freedom struggle namely Salt Sathyagraha, and went behind the bars for about 18 months. Time and again he wielded as an unpaid worker for the Congress party. He entered into an amateur theatre in the company of R. B. Ramakrishna Raju – a political leader and a successful lawyer. Nagiah even assisted the gramophone companies like Hutchins, Twin etc., as the domesticated musician. He brought down many assorted gramophone records just as Classical and light music and some of them were of the great legendary saint and musician, Thyagaraja Swami. Even at that period he brought in some tryouts to bring in the English wordses like 'My lovely lalanaa', 'I love you heart of hearts, sweet heart' and such in Telugu songs. The notorious personages like Musiri Subramania Iyer, and G. N. Balasubramaniam trained him in the Carnatic music. He met all the king pins of music over there and among them was a girl of 11 years who was singing Carnatic music astoundingly… the girl is the music empress M. S. Subbu Lakshmi! Nagiah was not only hallowed with singing potentialities but was also with high-quality composing attainments and gracious looks. He once accorded the Gowhathi Congress conferences with S. Srinivasa Iyyengar, who was a famous advocate in Madras and on their way back, they stayed at Allahabad for a few days. There they stayed at Mothilal Nehruji's Anand Bhavan. He met with a massive assemblage over there. He also saw Kamala Nehru. A young girl with a beautiful complexion and speaking fluent English was loitering among the majestic masters of politics. She used to keenly observe and probed questions at Nagiah while he was singing songs in Tamil and Telugu. The girl was none other than Indira Gandhi who became a distinguished politician in the world.

He later pulled in by stage appearances and worked with 'Rama Vilasa Sabha' a cultural association in Chittoor. He playacted in several stage shows like 'Sarangadhara', 'Viswamithra Chitra Nilayam', 'Savitri', 'Bruhannala' and 'Ramadasu' and represented as Pothana, Vemana, Rama Dasu and Thyagiah. He got gold medal for his female role as 'Chitrangi', in the play 'Sarangadhara'. During that period he was married to Vijaya Lakshmi, but she demised when she was giving birth to a girl child an year after. The incident kept Nagiah shattered for a long time. Later he was constrained to marry Girija, to look after his daughter. Fatefully his daughter deceased of ill health later. Destiny played a worse tragedy with Nagiah as Girija also departed the world when she incurred a miscarriage at eighth month. The blow of Girija's demise drove his father insane and he also dropped dead later. All these sufferings contrived Nagiah severely and he endeavoured for self-annihilation but as luck would have it rescued by his friends. Nagiah lost interest in life at some point, he exited away and stayed at Ramana Maharshi's Ashram and lived like a saint for sometime.
.
He did work for the Chennapuri Andhra Maha Sabha (CAMS) a popular cultural Association of Andhras in Madras. On that point, Nagiah acquired a conversance with an affluent auditor Bommi Reddy Narasimha Reddy who had a panache in fine arts. Later they both suited chummy friends. The auditor was none other than B. N. Reddy who became one of the leading filmmakers of India. At that time the grand old man of South Indian cinema - H. M. Reddy, arrived at Madras from Kolhapur and formed called Rohini Pictures with the association of B.N. Reddy. The firm started its first venture in Telugu through the film 'Gruhalakshmi' in 1938. At that time Nagiah happened to saw B.N. Reddy at Rohini Pictures and obviously he got of course a petite role (of Gopinath, Kannamba's brother) as a patriot in that film. His payment for that film was Rs. 750. Since the film was a big hit all over South India it fetched Nagiah an ample notice as his traits, skills and phonation overwhelmed the spectators. The song 'Kallu Maanandoi Baboo Kallu Theravandoi' in that film, which was sung by Nagiah, became very popular in those days. Due to many reasons B.N. Reddy separated from H.M. Reddy and elevated the firm Vahini Pictures, where Nagaiah took part in that worked solemnly for its growth.

'Vande Matharam' (1939) was another hit in which Nagiah played as hero. The film gained him remarkable praises and made him a star hero. As the films 'Sumangali' (1940), 'Devata' (1941), 'Bhakta Potana' (1942), 'Swarga Seema' (1945), 'Thygayya' (1946), 'Yogivemana' (1947) were huge hits he started getting offers from the Telugu and Tamil film industries equally Nagiah became the highest paid actor by the time he was doing the film 'Beedalapatlu'. His performance in the film 'Yogi Vemana' influenced a boy who later turned into a saint and became popular as 'Balayogi'. During 'Devatha' he married Jaya Lakshmi. The film 'Thyagiah' was released in the year 1946 was a fabulous classic film of the South Indian film history (some months ago the Vintage Heritage screened the film and it becharmed remarkable crowds). Nagiah was the producer, director, music director and actor for the film 'Thyagiah'. 'Thyagiah' was again a reverberant hit. After that he made films 'Naa Illu' in 1953 and 'Bhakta Ramadas' in 1964 which turned out to be a droop and Nagiah lost his wealth. Another musical hit of Nagaiah, was the Gemini Studio production, 'Chakradhari', in 1948 based on the story of the Maharashtrian potter-saint Gora Kumbhar, in the film Nagiah played the title role. Nagiah became very famous for his songs in this film.
.
He once flourished with five houses 2-3 cars, and with large crowds of people around him at that time. His remuneration in those days was one lakh rupees for a film. He used to offer a lions share out of his earnings to the Congress Party and wared a lot for politicians and their families. His generosities lead him down resulting to turn a loss. To make both ends meet, the grand artiste had no other pick than to play even cowboy roles in substandard films. Once Nagiah said about the state of affairs to his friend Bhashyam (an extremely famous Tamil author with the pen name 'Sandilyan') 'Udhara nimiththam bahukrutha vesham!' which meant for the sake of the stomach, one has to play many roles, the dialogue left his friend with tears. As an established star and talented actor Nagaiah was in demand to do character roles in several Tamil and Telugu Films. Nagiah played the lead role of Jean Val Jean and composed music along with A. Rama Rao, in the film 'Ezhai Padum Paadu' (based on the famous French classic Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables') in early 1950's, which was made by K. Ramnoth of Vahini Studios in Coimbattore. The film remained a classic in the South Indian film history. This film was also done in Telugu and later in Hindi. Later Nagiah produced and acted in the film 'Bhagyalakshmi' in 1943, which was directed by P.Pulliah in Telugu.

Nagiah was distinctive in his approach towards mankind. He always used to salute every traffic constable while traveling in car and he felt it as an accolade he is offering to them who stands under the sun only to help and guide the people. He was far famed for his hospitality. His unselfishness surpassed the limits and was root cause for his fiscal devastation. He treated everybody as true friend and admitted everyone to take total advantage of his benevolence. Most of the times he went out of the way to expend money only to give pleasures and happiness to people irrespective of their little acquaintance. He had no children of his own yet he was called as 'naannagaaru' (father) by most of the people in film industry as he treated everybody as his own children. Nagiah was a man of Old World values and culture. Yet he fought a gallant battle.
.
Woefully after his demise he was blanked out by the unthankful world. However a few old friends like Inturi Venkateswara Rao (the Telugu film journalist and scholar), struggled to erect a statue of Nagaiah at Chennai (in Panagal Park, T. Nagar), where he lived most of his life. The notorious Indian film journalist and the editor of 'Film India', Baburao Patel, described Nagiah as 'The Paul Muni of India'. Nagiah acted in about 160 Tamil films, and 200 films in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films in his 30 years of film career. He was the first South Indian who got the title 'Padma Sri' by the Government of India. Regarding this Nagiah remarked, "I have only 'Padmam' but no Sri'!' intended that he had only fame but not fortune. Andhra Film Journalists Association selected him as the 'Best Actor' in Film Ballet in the year 1939. The acutely etched out incident in his life was the honour extended by the Mysore and Thiruvankore Maharajas. The Thiruvankur Maharaja ennobled him in the middle of great pandits, royal veterans and amidst the glissando of Nadaswarm. The Maharaja himself made Nagiah to sit beside him on his throne and tendered 'Padapuja' (worshipping the feet). He honoured Nagiah with the title 'Abhinava Thyagaraju'. The Mysore Maharaja awarded him with 101 silver plates, which consisted masses of gold coins. In addition, he bestowed him with a gold chain, which had a pendant of Lord Sri Rama. Was this kind of tending proffered to any other actor in the Indian Film History?

He passed away in Madras on 30th December 1973 at the age of 72. He remained one of the greatest actors that Indian Cinema has seen since it began to talk in 1931.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (28 May 1923 – 18 January 1996), more commonly known as N.T. Rama Rao, NTR, or Anna garu, was a film actor, director, producer and a Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His repertoire of films included mythological, social and folk themes. He was awarded the Padma Sree by the government of India in the 1960s, recognizing his contribution to the Telugu cinema. After his film career, N.T. Ramarao became a political activist and party leader.
.
He was born in Nimmakuru, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Andhra-Christian College of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He later received an honorary doctorate from Andhra University.
.
Silver screen:
NTR had a major contribution to what can be considered "The Golden Age of Telugu Film Making" especially between the 1950 and 1965. Though there is little commentary available, analysts believe that the Telugu film industry produced some of the best mythological movies in the entire India movie making history, while the Tamil and Hindi movie industry produced better socially oriented films. This is mainly to do with the availability of capable actors, producers, directors, personnel and audience required for such movie making.
.
Though widely recognized for his mythological characters, Ramarao is considered one of the greatest actors in Telugu film and in South Indian film generally. His portrayal of avatars of Vishnu, especially Rama and Krishna, mesmerized an entire generation who saw the face of NTR when the Lord Krishna/Rama was mentioned, this even transcending even into non-Telugu speaking states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
.
As time passed by, NTR stopped playing the role of the prince in films. Instead he played the role of a poor yet heroic young man in the kingdom who is against the system in his kingdom. To the lakhs of the denizens in Andhra Pradesh, he became 'one of them' who assures the poor that he is there to rescue them from the wicked traitors in the kingdom.
.
The most notable movies acted by NTR in mythological characters are Maya Bazaar (Sri Krishna), Lava Kusa (Lord Rama), Sri Krishnaarjuna Yuddham (Sri Krishna), Bheeshma (Bheeshma), Bhookailas(Raavana),Nartanasala (Arjuna also as Bruhannala), Panadava-vanavsam (Bheema), Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam (Lord Venkateswara), Maha Mantri Thimmarusu (Sri Krishna Devaralyalu) and Dana Veera Sura Karna (Duryodhana, Sri Krishna, Karna). Apart from these he played a variety of roles in folklore characters like Jagadeka Veeruni Katha, Pathala Bhairavi etc. On the social front he played roles in the movies Malliswari, Kanyasulkam, Gundamma Katha, Missamma, Raktha Sambandham, Ramudu Bheemudu, Adavi Ramudu, Vetagadu, Gajadonga, Driver Ramudu, Sardar Paparayudu, Kondaveeti Simham, Justice Chaudhary, Bobbili Puli etc. He acted in over two hundred and eighty movies in the lead role.
.
Politics:
NTR formed the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982. Promoting a new movie, he was asked a question by a person in the audience who asked "ayya, memu mimmalni devudu laga adarincamu, kani meeru maku emi chesaru?” literally translated from Telugu meant "Sir, we have treated you like a God but what have you done for us?” He was so moved by this that he formed TDP and lead to victory in the immediate election, formed a government and ruled the state of AP for a full term. He went into the elections with the slogan 'Atma Gauravam' which meant self-pride. Like his movies, the formation of the party and storming into the assembly was very dramatic. TDP came into power within 9 months of its formation. Initially ridiculed by the Congress that state politics is not like movie acting among others, TDP was considered a no match for the congress, with the local representatives unheard of, the complete burden rested on the shoulders of NTR, and true to his charisma he won the elections with a landslide majority. Among other reasons why he won the elections was no real alternative to the Congress, lack of development, unemployment etc. He was very well supported by Ramoji Rao who gave wide publicity through the Telugu daily Eenadu. NTR himself contested elections from the constituency of Gudivada in Krishna District.Even though he lost the 1989 elections, he shot to fame at the national level and was capable of uniting many regional parties.
.
NTR stormed back to power in 1994 when he promised he would offer rice at Rs. 2/kg and to make AP an "Alcohol Free" state. True to his word he kept his promises only to burden the state exchequer. He also faced serious problems within his party because of the interference from his second wife Lakshmi Parvathi in party and government affairs. Foreseeing the imminent threat of the de-stabilizing wave within the party camaraderie, N Chandrababu Naidu lead a sudden revolt and split TDP into two, where the political careers of more than 180 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) was at stake. Naidu survived NTR's onslaught when NTR approached the public for an opinion and went on to break the record held by NTR as the longest serving Chief Minister of AP making a mark for himself. The break-up of the party and the drama that took place on the Tank-Bund (road connecting Hyderabad and Secunderabad on the banks of Hussain Sagar) were probably the last significant events in NTR's life. .
.
Aftermath:
The loss of power and the subsequent events can be summed up as the start of anti-climax in NTR's life with a majority of people believing that Lakshmi Parvathi was responsible for what would otherwise have been the greatest life lived by an Andhrite since Sri Krishna Devarayalu (a 15th Century King). Officially he died of a severe heart stroke but there are conspiracy theorists who believe he had high traces of steroids in his blood which were unacceptable for a man of that age. The entire state was shocked to hear the news of his death and paid homage in a way only a king receives. His funeral was a state-affair which set the then world-record.
It is believed that he could have become the Prime Minister of India, as the third-front won the national elections and was struggling to find a leader who was acceptable to all the parties. Chandrababu Naidu went on record that he would have supported NTR as the Prime Minister as the third-front was his brain child, but it was six months too late.
.
NTR was survived by eight sons and four daughters, and his second wife Lakshmi Parvathi. He has several grand sons and daughter but the most known of which are his son NTR Jr. who closely resembles to NTR and Nandamuri Kalyan Ram

Dr. Mohan Babu 's Bio-Data

About the Star:Hailing from a rural agriculture family, he rose to the exalted ranks of the most ornamented artiste, successful producer of purposeful films, eloquent representative of the people and the founder of a chain of prestigious educational institutions in the backward area of Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh by dint of his hardwork, dedication and determination.
A victim of casteism in his early professional life, he took a vow to strive hard for a casteless, egalitarian society. As the founder - chairman of 'Sree Vidyaniketan Educational Institutions' he saw to it that 25% of seats are offered to students of economically poor backward classes, free education and boarding are provided to them. 'Freedom from want is the real freedom' he says and helps the poor and downtrodden in the hour of need. When people were struck with cyclone and other natural calamities, he rushes to the area of devastation with medicines, food, utensils and of course money. A committed artiste like his dear 'Anna' N.T.R. he donated liberally to various welfare measures to a tune of nearly 50 lakhs from his hard earnings.
You can say his childhood was a well-stocked case of merriment. Stage and playgrounds fascinated him to a greater degree than a scholastic work. A chilly moonlight evinced a moderate gathering, where a stage was set to perform a 'Gypsy's' Character by a lad of hardly fourteen years, whose hands were all tremble, criss-crossing eyes unmasking shyness and fearfulness, stood on the dais, laying open to the public view the uncanny, natural and prolific abilities of a debutant, that stunned the spectators, fore speaking the fact that the talents of a gifted artiste were on footing. His father, a school Headmaster, wanted him to study hard and soar high in studies. But our hero had other plans in his mind. After finishing his graduation, he left to Madras to try his luck in films. But, he landed up in the YMCA College of physical education as a physical instructor. He worked hard and paved a small way into the film industry as an Assistant director. But even then no one were willing to take our hero know for his straight forwardness under their wings.
About the actorThe glamour of tinsel world mesmerized him. A merge salary of Rs.50 per movie as an assistant director way back in mid-seventies was no way covering his needs. His hunger-pangs were urging him to pole-vault against the order side of the camera. No producer worth his guts were willing to bet this money on this six-foot hunk known for his brash style. Watching others get roles to play made things worsen for our hero morally. But success is made of sterner stuff and greater determination. He kept trying, not quitting for he knew winners never quit, quitters never win. Then at last he came under the wings of Dr. Dasari Narayana rao. More often than illustrious men had a laborious past. Our hero is no exception. So came a break for our hero in first movie "Swargam Narakam" directed by his guru Dr. Dasari. He was then just Bhaktavatsalam Naidu, christened by his parents, rechristened as Mohan Babu by his Guru. And this set him on an onward, never look back voyage of discovery. Well, he didn't want just in Telugu so he gave a hand even in Tamil. 'Chevalier' Sivaji Ganesan had initiated him into Tamil movies and now our hero has 20 Tamil movies to his credit.
Up to date out hero has done 500 movies in short span of 25 years in this film industry. He proved one and all that he could dwell in any role of his choice, be it comedian, Hero, Villain, Character artiste, you name it and he's got the guts to do them all in the picture perfect scene. He has donned more than 80 pictures as a Hero. His unique and wonderful way of orchestration of dialogue cast in the classic mould of non-acting genre making him the darling of masses, the real admirers.
As a producer his first film was "Pratignya" which was a super hit in the year '82. He has made more than 30 films till date. Mention here should be made of his 'Pedarayudhu' which cast him in a dual role had set records of sorts in the 70 year old long history of south Indian cinema, a record still unfazed. His 'Major Chandrakanth' the Magnum opus is a tribute to his dear Anna Dr. NTR. The relationship shared by our hero and Dr. NTR was something, which everyone envied of. They were like two brothers inseparable. Major Chandrakanth was NTR's last social picture.
AwardsHis beloved brother Dr. NTR with his blessings in 1995 elected our hero for the Member of Parliament for Rajya Sabha. He was elected for Rajya Sabha, hoping he could help people even better and expand his services. He lived up much more than their hopes. With his spirit of sacrifice and the power of action besides the mass following he had. Our Hero won many awards for the best artiste from the press, Cultural organizations, Screen, Film fare and many others. All the awards as the 'Best Artiste may be numerable, but the real love and the titles as the 'Collection king' and 'Nata Prapoona' from the people of Andhra Pradesh are measureless, even if they are just a couple of them. A special mention should be made about his picture Pedarayudhu for which he bagged 12 'Best Actor' Awards and 5 Best Producer Awards.
Our hero was awarded by the University Of California with a 'Doctorate' for his outstanding achievements in the field of films and education. The 75 years old Writers Guild Of Canada awarded him with an honorary membership for his contribution in the field of story writing. He was made the deputy member for the International Parliament for Safety And Peace, U.S.A in due recognition in his achievements in the field of Education. The Glory of India International Award, which was awarded to Mother Teresa, was also awarded to him for the same. These are a few eloquent symbols of his mighty achievements as an artiste and as a Man. And he continues to press through frontier after frontier year after year. For our hero believes in not going where the path leads but instead wants to go where there is no path and leave a trail for deep within the wisdom of uncertainty lies the real zeal of life.

Celeb of the Week - Ghantasala

He is Telugu and Tamil composer and also a singer. Ghantasala is a legendry name in popular Telugu music who sang over 10,000 songs in his career, and composed apparently for over 125 films. He was born on 4th December 1923 in Chautapally, GudiwadaTaluk, AP, as the son of a musician. He was orphaned as a child. He acted as a child actor, in near slavery conditions, in plays like Chintamani and Sati Sakkubhai. He was apprenticed to the school of Susurlu Krishna Brahma Sastry and graduated from a music school at Vijayanagaram, while earning a living as an itinerant singer and beggar.
He received the title of Vidhwan in 1941. He was arrested and imprisoned in Alipore jail for singing patriotic songs during Gandhi's Satyagraha agitations (1942). He went to Madras in 1945. He worked with AIR for sometime. He broke through films in 1945 (Swargaseema), singing duets with Bhanumati to Nagaiah's score. He turned into composer in 1949 with Manadesam by LV Prasad. Known mainly for his love duets, he also rendered tragedy related songs for Akkineni Nageswara Rao's roles.
He combined the native idioms with classical Carnatic styles, e.g. in compositions for Chiranjeevulu and Rahasyam, set to the lyrics of Malladi RamaKrishna Sastry. His work in these two films was, to VAK Ranga Rao, his best film work although both films flopped. He did also produce Paropakaram in 1953. Ghantasala made a rare screen appearance in the hit Shri Venkateswara Mahatyam in 1960.

Rao Gopal Rao

Almost all Telugu-speaking people like Telugu movies. Some watch movies for their favorite stars, some for the music, some for the director, and some for dialogues but many watches because of the acting of some special actors. According to the Telugu lexicon (if I remember correctly) there are eight types of acting like Angikam, Vaachikam etc. Angikam type of acting refers to actors who act using their limbs excessively. Vaachikam refers to the type of acting who acts only using their unique dialogue delivery capacity. These types of actors usually stand at one place without moving their limbs and just change their facial expressions. Rao Gopala Rao garu was one such actor.
The artiste of the fortnight, Rao Gopala Rao garu, is one among those unique artistes in Tollywood who gave dialogue delivery a unique touch. Let us explore how this unique artiste contributed to Tollywood. Rao Gopala Rao garu was drawn to acting from a very young age. He started his filmi career with the movie "JagathKhiladilu" which starred Superstar Krishna. But it could be embarrassing for you to learn that Rao Gopala Rao's voice was dubbed with some dubbing artiste because the film's crew thought that the voice was not suitable for films.
However, an unperturbed Rao Gopala Rao waited for an opportunity to prove himself. Opportunity came to him in the form of "Mosagallaku Mosagadu" starring Superstar Krishna in his famous cowboy role. The movie was a smash hit and Rao Gopala Rao never looked back. He was noticed in the movies Sharada, Manchimanushulu but his popularity touched its peak with the movie "Muthyala Muggu" directed by Bapu and produced by Ramana. His dialogue " Manishante Kosantha Kala poshana undaala...." is still popular till today.
Rao Gopala Rao acted in many kinds of roles. He acted as a villain, character artist, comedian etc. but probably he excelled as a villain. Some of the movies in which he acted as a villain are Bhaktha Kannappa, Manavuri Pandavulu, Sardar Paparayudu, Khaidi, Ooriki monagadu, Tyagayya, Bobbili Brahmanna, Gangleader etc. Telugu film industry is proud to give birth to an actor of this calibre. We, at idlebrain.com salute this very unique actor once again.

His first big hit was Akhari Poraatam co-starring Sridevi that ran for 100 days in 12 centers. Geethanjali a love story directed by Maniratnam followed by Shiva an action film directed by Ram Gopal Varma were highly successful and established him as one of the top heroes. He was known for encouraging new directors such as Ram Gopal Varma by giving them a chance to make movies with him. He also made his Bollywood debut with the Hindi remake of Shiva. Movies such as President Gari Pellam and Hello Brother gave him the status of a mass hero. After that, Ninne Pelladutha directed by Krishna Vamsi followed and was a huge hit. Later, he took up the challenge of portraying Annamacharya, the legendary singer/poet of medieval times in the movie Annamayya It ran for 100 days in 42 centers and is one of the biggest hits in Tollywood. Nagarjuna never hesitates to experiment when he produces films. He gave a chance to a newcomer who had no prior experience in movies to direct him. The newcomer didn't disappoint him and went on to become one of the finest directors of Indian film industry. The director is none other than RamGopal Verma. Nag is also known for his swiftness in decision making. He agreed to work with Krishna Vamsi(director) after seeing 10-minute-rushes of the director's film Gulabi. His decision proved to be bang on target as they made the blockbuster movie ninne pelladutha. Nagarjuna never works after 6pm. If there is night shoot, he has to be informed 4 days earlier. Nag is not very keen on acting in tamil films. This despite the fact that he has a huge fan following in tamilnadu. His films like geethanjali and shiva had seen excellent runs in tamil nadu. His re-entry in tamil however was marred by the listless movie(ratchagan). Nag however got raving reviews for his performance in ratchagan and obviously the screenplay/story? of the movie which was a letdown.
